As a kid, I used to look forward to Christmas. What gift will I get? All of my gifts under the tree said, "TO: Bruce FROM: Santa". I was mesmerized!
Even when I was privy to the skinny of the fat guy, I still anticipated the big day. Everyone likes gifts. And still, my tags read, "To: Bruce From: Santa". Those silly parents... don't they know I know? But it was still really cool.
At some point, I discovered that I enjoyed giving gifts even more than receiving them. That's odd! I remember vividly purchasing a gift for my mother years ago. (She's in heaven now). I was so proud of myself. I picked out a set of plates, cups, and silverware that was, in my eyes, perfect. Mom was so gracious to receive them. She acted like they were precious additions to our home. Not because she need a set of cheap, plastic kitchenware. "TO: Mom FROM: Bruce"
So, gifts are never "the thing" for me anymore. Sure, they are nice, and I really appreciate all the things that have been placed on my desk the past few days. But my greatest joy comes from the relationship I have with the who signs the tag. "TO: Bruce FROM: "You". Thank you! You are a precious gift in my life.
May the of festivities of this season reminds us of the greatest gift giver.
